Choosing the Old or New System

Old system: internship before examination

The source diagram applies this route to students who began before February 1, 2018.

  1. Complete the pre-service teacher education courses.
  2. Complete the educational internship.
  3. Obtain the Certificate of Completion of Pre-Service Teacher Education.
  4. Pass the Teacher Qualification Examination and obtain the qualified teacher certificate.

The diagram's historical transition rules state that students who had not begun the internship had to apply by January 31, 2024, or move to the new system. Those who had completed the internship had to pass the examination by January 31, 2028, or repeat the internship.

New system: examination before internship

The source diagram applies this route to students who began on or after February 1, 2018, old-system students who elected to switch, and those whose old-system transition period expired.

  1. Complete the pre-service teacher education courses and obtain the Certificate of Completion of Pre-Service Teacher Education.
  2. Pass the Teacher Qualification Examination.
  3. Complete the educational internship and obtain the qualified teacher certificate.

Professional Education Course Sequence

  1. Semesters 1–2: Education foundations and teaching methods courses.
  2. Semester 3: Subject-specific teaching methods.
  3. Semester 4: Subject-specific teaching practicum.

Electives may be taken in any academic year. Students must complete the subject-specific teaching methods course before the corresponding practicum.

Course requirements shown in the source diagram

  • Teacher education course codes begin with STP. The program requires two years of coursework; winter and summer sessions do not count toward that period.
  • Students take at least 2 and no more than 8 credits per semester, including credits counted toward the maximum set by their department.
  • Before taking subject-specific teaching methods, students must have completed or be taking at least 12 professional education credits, including at least 2 credits in education foundations and 4 credits in teaching methods.
  • Students admitted in Academic Year 2015–16 or earlier were required to choose among the education issues seminar, career development education, and vocational education and training. Those admitted in Academic Year 2016–17 or later were required to take the education issues seminar.
  • Students admitted in Academic Year 2014–15 or later must complete at least 54 hours of field-based service learning, according to their teaching category.
  • Credits in education foundations or teaching methods beyond the required minimum may count as electives. An elective cannot count simultaneously toward both professional education and specialized subject requirements.

Professional Education Credit Transfer

  1. Download and complete the application form, attach an original transcript, and highlight the courses proposed for credit transfer.
  2. Submit the documents to the Center for Teacher Education for preliminary review. The Center checks that each course is a professional education course (STP), that its title and content meet the recognition criteria, and that the student passed it.
  3. The Center's committee reviews the application.
  4. The Office of Academic Affairs processes approved credit transfers.
